Genuine Voices was established as a nonprofit organization in 2002. The idea to form the organization was inspired by a story of juvenile offenders in Los Angeles who were given an opportunity to channel their emotions through creative outlets to express themselves through journalism. Two of the youths later became Hollywood screenwiters. Genuine Voices main concept is to teach music to at-risk inner-city youths as a means of building their creativity and increasing their resilience.
